The Challenge

In 2017 Devon Energy Corporation (a leading independent oil and natural gas exploration and production company located in OKC) held a competition, Hackathon, with the goal of creating working products that solve real problems within the oil and gas space. The specific focuses to choose from were completions, drilling, or on-site security. Each team had only 24hrs to design, build and present their products.

Our team chose to focus on the problem concerning completions. Devon was looking for a product that would help drive better on-site decision making and behaviors, reduce costs, along with a few other technical aspects specific to oil and gas drilling and completions.

A few pain points that stood out to us…

  • Significant cost increases caused by sudden shutdowns.
  • Inefficient utilization of on site supervisor.
  • Decision errors/delays from inexperienced employees.
  • Too many hands in the pot to approve mission critical decisions.
  • Actions delayed due to manual processes.

The Solution

Fracn'stein

Creating a mobile and desktop web app, our solution revolved around using analytics and an alert system for our key users. We also chose to incorporate gamification to help with adoption and incentivize vendors to stay on time and under budget. Our solution allowed users to be in the field performing some of their other daily tasks and responsibilities as well.
